Peaky Blinders: No Season 7, But Steven Knight Confirms Movies And Spin-Offs, Cillian Murphy Is Game

Peaky Blinders Season 7 unfortunately remains wishful thinking. Still, creator of one of the best gangster series out there, Steven Knight, doesn't plan to end things there. While another season isn't in the works, a movie is and spin-offs aren't from the table, either. Even Cillian Murphy himself would be game for that!

Complex characters, compelling story arcs paired with 1920s vibes (including the post-war poverty and trauma, of course): that's Peaky Blinders in a nutshell, iconic to this day. Steven Knight has managed to bind audiences to the screens for six seasons straight, so the news that there won't be a season 7 hits hard.

Still, no need to despair: the Peaky Blinders world isn't a thing of the past at all and shall live on through movies and spin-offs!

Little refresh:

Peaky Blinders follows the journey of the Shelby clan and their Birmingham-based gang as they do everything in their power to expand their influence across England. The bunch is led by Tommy Shelby (played by Cillian Murphy), a cunning and charismatic young veteran of WWI, who guides the family's ascent in the criminal underworld.

Steven Knight Opens Up About His Plans For Peaky Blinders

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the show's creator and writer Steven Knight shared his plans regarding the Peaky Blinders world. The final season 6 was merely "the end of the beginning," according to him – that's what we like to hear!

Back in February 2022, he claimed that the TV show would end, but a movie would follow, for which shooting was going to begin "in 18 months time, maybe a little bit longer." Seems like the "little bit longer" was right in this case, but shooting shouldn't take too long to start.

Steven Knight went on:

After that, according to how the film structure falls into place, we'll set in motion some spin-offs that will be part of the same universe.

He's remained tight-lipped about the story of the movie and the spin-offs, though. Still, in another interview with Radio Times he said that he is "just working on the final bits at the moment" and that shooting will start in the middle of next year. This was back in December 2023, so filming should start in summer 2024.

Also, if the movie does well, spin-offs will follow and Knight already told Variety that he won't be taking control of all these new projects and will instead "pass on the baton".

It would be a shame to lose Steven Knight for the spin-offs, but he surely set up a world that other writers could flourish in.

Cillian Murphy Is Down For A Peaky Blinders Spin-Off, Too

In the wake of Barbenheimer, Variety let Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy have a go at each other at Actors On Actors. As a huge Peaky Blinders fan herself, the Barbie actress couldn't help herself but ask if Murphy would consider reprising his role as Tommy Shelby again.

Fans, rejoice: he's open to the idea! So, there's a non-zero chance that Tommy Shelby graces our screens again because, and Murphy is absolutely right in his assessment, there's still so much story to tell. Keeping that in mind, if the movie that's to come is a success, there might be a highly anticipated return to look forward to.

Remember, though, at this point, these are all just speculations at this point. There are still lots of other factors that could make or break Tommy's return, but Cillian Murphy would be open to the idea, at the very least.

For now, there's nothing left to do but wait for the announced movie to progress. We'll keep you posted and as soon as there's news or a release date to report, you can be sure we'll let you know!
