Skyrim Mod Brings 24-Year-Old RPG Classic Back To Life And It's Better Than Ever

The gaming community is sometimes capable of truly remarkable things. This time, it's about an old vampire RPG, Skyrim, and a team of modders bringing both together.

Studios often release remakes of their biggest hits to bring aging games into the modern era, appealing to both new and old fans alike. But what about all the games whose studios either no longer exist or simply don't bother remaking them? That's where the community comes in, using mods to breathe new life into beloved old games. You won't believe what this team has done with Skyrim.

Fans Remake Vampire The Masquerade Redemption In Skyrim

You thought I was talking about a Skyrim remake? Well, you thought wrong! Fans of the 24-year-old Vampire: The Masquerade – Redemption have recreated the RPG in the form of a total conversion mod of Skyrim. The end result bears little resemblance to the fantasy RPG, except perhaps in the menu layout.

What is a total conversion mod?

A total conversion is a modification of an existing game that swaps out almost all of the artistic assets found in the original game, and occasionally alters fundamental aspects of gameplay as well. Total conversions can lead to a genre entirely distinct from the original. One of the most famous total conversion mods is the first Counter-Strike, which is based on Half-Life.

In the video of creator Galejro, you can see first gameplay footage from VTM Redemption Reawakened. In a first-person view, the player navigates through an underground facility, using both various firearms and supernatural powers.

Later in the video, we see the player from a third-person perspective, traversing the streets of 2000s London. Even the sewers are not safe from our armed friend. However, he is not alone: The player is eventually attacked by a bat-like giant beast.

The original game tells the story of Christof, a medieval crusader who is transformed into a vampire during one of his adventures. The second half of the game takes him into the modern era, where he wanders through turn-of-the-millennium London. Despite its interesting premise, the original VTM: Redemption faced a tough time at its release in 2000. As Gamespot summarized back then:

Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption is a visually impressive action-packed RPG based on the White Wolf pen-and-paper RPG. It boasts a strong premise and ambitious design, but is bogged down by its repetitive and frequently frustrating combat, unfortunate design choices, and forgettable characters and storyline.

With this fan-made remake, a major weakness of the original could be rectified: the combat system. Back then, it was still quite rudimentary, lacking direct control over your party and tactical pauses. In the Skyrim system, it's a completely different story.

When the mod will be released is still uncertain. Make sure to check out the corresponding YouTube channel for further insights and the Twitter/X account for updates.
