We just got the first trailer for Elden Ring's big expansion, called Shadow of the Erdtree. The DLC will release on June 21, 2024 and obviously introduce a lot of new content. While we don't know the details, we already got a first look at some of the new locations in the Land of Shadows as well as a glimpse at some of the new bosses, like Messmer the Impaler. But what many of us are most interested in, are the new weapons that were shown in the trailer.

We already know that Shadow of the Erdtree will introduce quite a few new weapons and even whole new weapon types, so let's take a look at what we already know about the upcoming boss slaying tools.

Shadow of the Erdtree Will Bring 8 New Weapon Types

One of the things that makes Elden Ring, and actually any Souls game, so much fun, is the huge variety of weapons you can find or unlock to experiment with. Every weapon has a different scaling and depending on the weapon type a different moveset, which allows for a myriad of builds. Every player can choose their favorite way of fighting, be it a slow but powerful colossal weapon to stun everything with one hit, quick daggers to apply status effects as fast as possible or staffs for magic attacks.

We are sure that all of you already tried at least a few different weapon types in Elden Ring and if you put in a ton of time and unlocked everything there is to find, you might be hyped about the addition of new weapons. Miyazaki mentioned in an interview with Famitsu that the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC will introduce eight new weapon types. Yes, you read that right, eight new weapon TYPES, not eight new weapons... While we don't know how many individual weapons that will be, it could very well be up to 50 new weapons.

While he didn't go into too much detail, Miyazaki mentioned the giant Japanese swords, known as Odachi, one of which can be seen in the trailer, as well as reverse-handed swords or the Dueling Shields that work as a defensive as well as offensive weapon. Also, there will be some form of martial arts which could be linked to some new fist weapons.

Here is a list with new weapons we saw in the trailer:

  • Odachi: A giant two-handed sword, probably pretty slow
  • reverse-handed curved swords: Fast dual-wielded swords, most likely with a dexterity scaling
  • Throwing daggers: Apparently those daggers will turn all your attacks into throws
  • Dueling shields: Those shields are supposed to be used offensively and defensively
  • Machine gun crossbow: This crossbow can shoot a ton of arrows very quickly, just like a machine gun

Those are the new weapons, we could see in the trailer used by player characters, however, we highly suspect that players will again be able to obtain all the boss weapons as well.
